Summer Storm Prep for Rochester Property Owners
Western New York gets some of the most violent summer storms in the country. Lake-effect downbursts off Ontario can drop fifty-mile-per-hour winds with no warning, and a typical June thunderstorm can take down a weakened limb that's been hanging on since the ice storms of January. Getting ahead of storm damage in early summer, before the worst of the season hits, is one of the smartest investments a Rochester property owner can make.
What Makes a Tree Vulnerable
Not all trees fail equally in a storm. The trees most likely to drop limbs or come down entirely share a few common traits. Cracks at major branch unions, especially the V-shaped junctions where two large limbs share a trunk, are the single biggest risk factor. Co-dominant stems, where a tree has two main leaders of similar size, are inherently weaker than trees with a single dominant trunk.
Dead branches that didn't show themselves in winter often reveal themselves in June, when the rest of the canopy leafs out and the dead sections stand out. Any large limb without leaves by mid-June is dead wood that will eventually fall, and it's far better for that to happen when we're cutting it down than when wind is.
Soft-wooded species like silver maple, willow, and box elder fail in storms more often than oaks or hickories. If you have one of these near a structure, it deserves more frequent attention.
Preventive Pruning Pays Off
The most effective storm prep is selective pruning. Removing dead wood, reducing the weight on overextended limbs, and thinning a dense canopy so wind can pass through rather than push against the whole tree can dramatically reduce the chance of failure.
This work has to be done correctly. Topping a tree, which means cutting back the entire top to stubs, actually makes storm risk worse over time because the regrowth comes back weakly attached. Proper crown reduction by a trained professional preserves the tree's structure while making it less likely to catch the wind.
High-Risk Locations
Trees that lean over your roof, garage, driveway, or power lines deserve a closer look before storm season. The cost of a preventive trim is a small fraction of what an emergency removal costs, and a tiny fraction of what it costs to repair a smashed roof or replace a vehicle.
